Library Makes Headlines

Cathy Allred, of the Daily Herald, reported the following article printed on the cover page of Section B, OUR TOWNS of the Saturday, August 28, 2010 paper.

SARATOGA SPRINGS- A new municipal library, a first for the city of Saratoga Springs, will open in mid-January if all goes as planned, according to library board member Kim Tolman.

Until then, the Bank of American Fork Saratoga branch is storing 7,000 to 8,000 books in its basement for the library.

"For years now in this community, residents have requested a library but because of funding and locations haven't been able to do anything," said Jim Miller, bank branch manager and Saratoga council  member.

It's been nearly a decade since a Saratoga Springs resident petitioned city council members for a public library, and now plans for that library seem to be falling into place.

"They have pulled in some of the most amazing talent I have ever seen," Miller said of the board members and organizers. The board president, Ranny Lacanienta is a BYU librarian and has a knowledge of how to start a library and operate one.

"He is fantastic in collection development and also knows the system on how to create a library and how to run a library day to day," Tolman said. "He understands how a library works. He has actually been petitioning the city council to create a library since 2003."

Tolman has a background in business and human development. Then there is Natasha Potter.

"She is very, very well connected with the businesses," Tolman said. "And she is a ball of energy. She is great."

The list of volunteers who are key to moving the library project along is long and impressive. They've created a synergy that appears contagious and has brought in results.

"I'm really excited about this," Tolman said. "This is a great project. We've had just great success in the community."

Saturday was to have been the second of five book drives planned for the library. Additionally, three more fundraisers are planned.

Organizers are also selling tiles for $10 for children decorate. The tiles will become part of the storytime area decor art. Orders for tiles can be placed with Tolman at ktolman@live.com.

Another Saratoga resident, Kiwanis President Stuart Collyer, was able to let the Kiwanis Club's Governor of the Utah and Idaho Region, Brent Ashworth, know what the focus of the fairly new Kiwanis Club was--to help build a public library in Saratoga Springs.

Ashworth made a donation after hearing what the Saratoga/Eagle Mountain chapter was doing, giving the library more than 1,500 books from his private collection.

Miller was able to offer the Bank of American Fork basement for storage and cataloging the book donations, and Boy Scouts from Troop 1024 in Saratoga Springs helped carry more than 160 boxes from Ashworth's truck to the Bank of American Fork branch basement.

Mayor Mia Love said she is excited about the progress the library committees and board members have made and that a city library will finally open in 2011.

"Especially since we have not had to raise property taxes to do it," Love said.

"They are moving along, they are really moving along. It is really neat to see people come together for this."

With Scouts and others hosting book drives in the city for the library, the current library collection stored in the basement is near 7,000 books.

"This library will succeed because of the support, the outpouring of the community," Miller said. "People want this library so bad."

8/28 BOOK DRIVE!

We are holding our second book drive on Saturday, August 28th for the Pelican Bay, Fox Hollow, Lake Mountain and Hawks Landing communities. Simply place your donated books near your front door/porch by 8 am, and a volunteer will come by to pick them up! Those volunteering to collect donated books general gather the books from 8- 10 am.

Please Note: Any books that are donated to the library become the property of the library. If the library is unable to use them for any reason, we will sell the books to raise funds to purchase a book necessary to our collection.

Thanks to all who are donating, giving time and supporting this wonderful cause!
